Why Recycle?
Collegedale hauls roughly 150 truck loads of waste to the landfill each year. The cost to the city is more than $500 per load, which is about $75,000 per year. Recycling will reduce this cost. In addition, the sale of recyclable materials will help offset the cost of recycling.
Recycling saves energy and reduces air pollution. For example, production of recycled paper uses 80% less water and 65% less energy and produces 95% less air pollution than virgin paper production. On average, the entire recycling process uses about 11.3 million Btu to manufacture new products from a ton of recycled material. Manufacturing goods from virgin materials uses about 23.3 million Btu.
Recycling is the right thing to do. It conserves our natural resources for coming generations and saves landfill space. Extracting nonrenewable resources from the earth to manufacture items which are used for a short time and then sent to a landfill is wasteful and unsustainable. All area residents are invited to participate in our recycling program.
Center Information
Six recycling bins are located at the Collegedale Public Works Department on Sanborn Drive. Sanborn Drive is the first turn to the right, at the old city sign, east of the crest of the Apison Pike Pass through White Oak Ridge. Follow the signs to the recycling center, which is on the right.
